With the accelerating integration of renewable energy, long-duration energy storage (LDES) has become essential for stabilizing power grids and ensuring a continuous energy supply.

Compared with conventional short-duration batteries, LDES systems can store and discharge energy over extended periods—hours or even days—allowing utilities to smooth out daily or weekly fluctuations in renewable generation. This capability is especially valuable in regions with high renewable penetration, where solar and wind intermittency can otherwise lead to grid instability, energy curtailment, or blackouts.

However, designing and deploying LDES solutions is not without challenges: maintaining capacity stability over thousands of cycles, achieving high system efficiency, controlling lifecycle costs, and ensuring safe operation under extreme conditions all require advanced technology and careful system-level optimization.

In 2025, HiTHIUM introduced the ∞Cell 1300Ah and dedicated 8-hour long-duration energy storage (LDES) cells, designed for extended multi-hour discharge in utility-scale and commercial energy storage applications. These cells are specifically engineered to support long-duration deployments, helping to ensure stable operation and reliable integration into large-scale energy storage projects.

System-Level Innovation

In 2025, HiTHIUM launched the ∞Power8 6.9 MW / 55.2 MWh 8-hour native long-duration energy storage solution, designed for utility-scale and commercial applications. The company also introduced the lithium-sodium collaborative solution for AI data centers, representing the first long-duration system of the kind for mission-critical operations.

These products reflect HiTHIUM’s focus on high-capacity, long-duration energy storage technologies and support integration into large-scale energy storage projects worldwide.

Safety and Standards Leadership

HiTHIUM has completed the world’s first open-door large-scale fire tests for the battery energy storagesystems, including tests on the ∞Power 6.25 MWh LDES system under extreme combustion conditions. These tests were conducted under the supervision of UL Solutions and fire protection engineers, in compliance with UL 9540A and NFPA 855 safety standards, and demonstrated that the systems maintained structural integrity and contained thermal events without propagation under severe conditions.

The system is the first to feature 1,175 Ah high-capacity cells, which use a three-dimensional airway design and directional valve structure to enable controlled release of high-pressure gases at the cell level. Under extreme combustion conditions, the system maintained structural integrity and contained thermal events without propagation — providing a meaningful safety benchmark for the industry as LDES systems scale toward longer durations and higher capacities.

By pioneering these rigorous safety validations at higher energy levels, HiTHIUM has contributed to advancing safety verification methodologies for large-scale energy storage and supports ongoing efforts to enhance industry safety standards for long-duration storage applications.
