HiTHIUM Supports Statkraft's Renewable Expansion with First Project in Navarra

Navarra, Spain, July 28th — Leading energy storage technology company HiTHIUM has announced a deal to provide containerized battery energy storage systems (BESS) and long-term technical support to Statkraft, one of Europe's largest renewable energy producers. HiTHIUM is delivering six BESS infinity-Block units (5.016MWh each), including also the supply of the PCS from a Spanish leading manufacturerproviding a turnkey architecture designed for high-density energy storage and grid-scale reliability. The configuration delivers a combined energy storage capacity of 30.1MWh at Statkraft's Montes de Cierzo Wind Farm in northern Spain. The battery systems will support Statkraft with smoothing output, ancillary services including frequency regulation, peak shaving, and valley filling – all helping to improve the utilization rate of the wind power generated at the farm.

Liquid cooling and advanced prismatic LPF cells secure BESS lifespan in Spanish climate

HiTHIUM's ∞Block 5.016MWh BESS units are liquid-cooled, which will facilitate more consistent thermal control and help the system maintain a stable performance. This is especially relevant for the location's summer temperatures as high as 40°C or more and winter lows down to freezing. This closer temperature regulation improves battery lifespan, allowing for the more compact layout of the container. The ∞Blocks also feature the manufacturer's prismatic 314 Ah LPF cells with an exceptionally high cyclic lifetime. Developed, tested, and produced at intelligent HiTHIUM facilities, the systems benefit from highly advanced quality control processes, further ensuring their reliability and endurance.


Repowering 26-year-old project with BESS enables greater efficiency and stability

Situated in Tudela, Navarra, and originally built in 2000 to generate power for more than 41,000 homes, the wind farm is currently being repowered. The first phase, completed in the spring of 2026, replaced 44 old turbines with ten new ones, while the second phase will add battery energy storage and replace the remaining 41 turbines with four new ones. During the dismantling process of phase one, Statkraft was able to reuse or recycle nearly all the materials, including close to 2,000 tonnes of steel, as well as aluminium, copper, fibreglass and a wide range of other components. Despite sharply reducing the number of wind turbines at the farm, Statkraft will manage to increase Montes de Cierzo's total energy capacity from 60MW to 90MW. Annual electricity generation is expected to double to around 300GWh.
